when an engineer-wanna-be wears scrub

Bismillah. 

Alhamdulillah seronok dan hyper. Mula-mula rasa agak malas dan nervous sebab buat benda yang tak pernah buat and I afraid things gonna turn out bad but yesterday was amazingly one of the most awesome-est days of my life! 

Our senior design project requires us to observe a surgery, to get some kind of sense on how retractor works in OR. When they say observe, what seriously crossed my mind was like what they do in Greys Anatomy. I mean, you watch it from a room, looking down to where the operation is going on. Cool, boleh merasa gak tgk OR kat sini. So then, Azni and I prepared the designs that we need to show our supervisor who is also the surgeon that night. We were like, omg, lets just get this done. (sambil buat nada tak puas hati ngn pakcik2 segroup kerana mereka gumbira mengucapkan good luck kepada kami. heh cuak okayy haha)

Apparently the policy for student to observe surgery changed last Friday that we had some problem to get our badge. Tapi lepas tunggu 2 HOURS, okaylah semua beress. It is pretty surprising sbb kitorang dapat permanent badge. Boleh datang hospital ni bila2 la cani haha. Sejuk sikit hati lepas wasting my precious two hours ececeyyy. Lesson #1: Benda awesome tak datang bergolek atau pakcik kat kampung saya cakap great thing doesnt come easy right? Sabar sket je. :)

Obviously I did not look like people above tapiiiiii, i wore that blue thingy! Scrub. Scrub pinjam yang warna lusuh2 tapi rasa cam pakai baju raya berkelip kelip okay. (kalau anda pakai bnda ni tiap2 hari boleh senyap sekarang, jangan downkan saya. haha.) Kalat gak la tapi sebab pakcik engineer yang jaga kitorang cakap tak boleh pakai tudung dalam OR. and I was like HAAA ABESLAAH! Tapi he was kind enough to think of a way and came up with penutup kepala yang sorok tudung kitorang. THANKS. THANKS tahap dewa tauuu. Lesson #2: There will always be a way. Jangan cepat putus asa sebelom berusaha. and sentiasalah hormat and respect pendirian orang lain, walaupun most of the time kita tak paham pon kenapa. Pakcik supervisor tu tatau pon asal kena pakai tudung, he didnt even know what to call tudung, last2 panggil head thingy je. but still, he respect and helped us. May Allah guide you. and us.

Lepas da lengkap pakai ala-ala nak gi angkasa lepas, kitorang masuk la this OR. (Tak penah tau la pulak diorang pakai camni, ingat cam sempoi-sempoi je). and ingat (lagi?) mcm dlm greys anatomy tapi rupa-rupanya kitorang masuk je that OR wah seronok! Hip replacement surgery. Apparently our supervisor tu, surgeon yang famous with this hip replacement. The patient that we will observe need to change his hip implant with a new one. Seriously people, this field is not delicate. NOT DELICATE AT ALL. Semua alat sampai ke hammer surgeon tu pakai. Bunyi de apatah lagi. Ada bunyi cam paku something kat dinding(ketuk implant masuk dlm bone), ada bunyi sedut2 air kotak slurpp slurppp (tgh sedut2 darah) and also ada bunyi drilling. Drill bukan grill tau. haha. and the surgeon drilled the patient's bone to fit the implant. Ni lagi dasyat dari nak buat kereta kat kilang ni. Dalam hati: oi oi, tu orang laa slumber je ketuk, and drill tulang dia!! and maaf laa rakan-rakan dalam bidang medicine, saya pakai term saya sendiri suka hati jiwa raga je haha. 

Apart from those scary and jaw dropping scenes(seb baik pakai mask, kalo tak kantoi je saya ternganga tak percaya boleh buat camtu kat manusia haha), we get some insight about the retractor that we are working on. Rasa cam power rangers je sebab that surgeon was talking to us sambil membedah orang tu, bercerita how things work. and how he wants each instrument works. Real life example. Hasilnya jeng jeng jeng..

Haa masuk pon implant tu. :) Oh satu lagiii, bila mereka menghiris kulit si patient, sebelum sampai ke muscle fiber, guess what?, I saw lemak. fat. and I was like, gulp, "lamaaaaanya aku tak pegi rec." Lemak setebal jari telunjuk. Agak agak kalo diorang bedah saya, tak jumpa tulang sebab semuanya lemak. Haha saiko saiko. Lesson #3: Jom pegi rec? ke? hahahaha

Even in OR, things dont always click. As an outsider, tgk je la kan mampu. Again, seb baik pakai mask, tak nampak saya senyum sorang2 bila melihat things get intense. Azni, pakcik camera, pakcik engineer and saya hanya mampu pandang each other. Lesson #4: "When things just don't click, you need to step back for a while and come back fresh". Ni pakcik camera datang bisik kat saya. Angguk je la. and he said ni first time dia tengok after few months, if I'm not mistaken, he's working with the team. Wow this is much more than a hip replacement surgery :) and things travel fast :) sebab.. bila naik atas ke office, mereka semua macam, "yeah we heard something happened". Ada Astro ke apa beb?

Pheww whatever pon, untuk kali ke-111, I heart biomedical engineering. sangatlah!! and yess alhamdulillah another impian mat jenin dah tercapai. fuh byk betol impian mat jenin saya hehe. Last lesson: you definitely will never know what Allah will give you in life. ada kaitan ke? haha.

kak yana, the feeling is just too awesome. you know why :)

Europe 2009: Day 6

Venice, Italy

ok tatau ah patut give up ke apa dgn europe punya day ni. totalnya 15 hari tapi saya baruuu hari ke-6. belom campur jalan uk and germany lagi. putus harapan lah macam ni heshh.

Anyway, jom lah tengok hari ke-6 kelana convoy ni buat apa.

Fusina ni nama tempat campsite. Ramai org sebab summer kan and mat saleh berparty-partian seperti biasa but anyhow, it's beautiful. Okay mari ke bandar Venice..

wow tak wow tak? haha. mula-mula jalan agak semangat kerana memikirkan venice adalah antara tempat idaman hati nak pergi. and wow cantik laa. Atas ni gambar dari jambatan yang namanya sudah hilang dari ingatan.

Next is Piazza San Marco. Si gadis cantik kawan saya tengah berjalan2. (hihihihi hai zed i love you more, just in case kau baca =D). Notice di sini populasi burung merpati sangat tinggi dan anda boleh bermain dengan mereka dengan senang sekali. Saint Mark's Basilica juga kelihatan di depan kawan saya itu. Ini ialah church yang famous di kalangan populasi church. Pakcik Wiki la yang bagitau saya.

Apa Venice famous dengan? Haa lace. Tu la yang makcik di atas tengah terangkan. Hand made lace. Tapi saya obviously melilau kat belakang time ni so tatau lah detail apa yang dia cakap. Lagi Venice jugak famous dengan Murano glass and Venetian mask. Ingat ye kawan-kawan walaupon mungkin tak masuk exam. oh mmg tak masuk exam.

Gondola! Syok jugak la naik benda ni. padahal cam sampan je haha. Pakcik Gondola enggan menyanyi lalu amoi pon dengan sportingnya mendendangkan lagu Only you. Haha. Seronok mendengar dendangan lagu amoi yang ulang ayat sama dan attempt2 Qhayyum untuk turut serta menyanyi. Naseb baik panas makin terik bukannya guruh berdentum2 haha. Btw tatau la apa motif Qhayyum membuat muka seperti itu shesshh.

Saya rasa ni la gambar paling best sbb ada 6 of us. Amoi 1, Amoi 2, Qhayyum, Zed, Azam and saya. oh 7 termasuk pakcik gondola jugaa.

Ni view kat tempat kami makan. Wah time ni da kurang sedikit minat kepada Venice keranaa panas. panaaaas hingga penat lapar dan dahaga sekali. haha.

But anyhow, saya tetap berjalan dengan semangat seperti biasa.

Atas jambatan yang lupa namanya dan im just too lazy to search the name.

I would say that this is one of the best moments in my life. Mana nak dapat great combination camni weyy. haha. Tau tak apa yang diorang tengah discuss? whether to stand up or just sit down bila orang besar masuk sbb Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah baru masuk the hall time tu and kitorang semua berdiri. and moment yang lawaknya when Shaykh Abdallah  sorok tangan dia bila Habib Ali nak cium tangan. haha terkial2 cari tangan yang hilang. Lepas tu siap buat small discussion sesi buat fatwa whether to stand up or just sit down. Lawak je sebab semua gelak2 nak tegakkan pegangan masing2. Shaykh Abdallah tak bagi berdiri, Habib Ali suruh berdiri. Tapi malangnya Shaykh Abdallah tak bagi Imam Zaid Syakir terjemahkan apa yang diorg bincang. Precious moment in life, insyaAllah akan ingat smpai bila2.

Europe 2009: Day 5

Innsbruck, Austria

Mari membuka semula buku Europe kita kerana Naziha sedang bosan bekerja. Jadi hari kelima kami semua berada di Austria. Oh ini Austria, theres no kangaroo here okay haha. Sementara menanti orang2 siap mengemas bas (haa kemas bas?), kami berdua bermain di taman pemainan. Everyone surely ada kanak2-side dlm diri kan? eleh tak payah tipu la, kalau nampak buaian tu tanak naik konon, control macho lah tuu. But anyway, we had a great time with these naughty kids. Let see if I still remember their names - Ammar, err anak abg sam (sorang irfan, sorang lagi ali kan?) and Zafri.

We then went to City of Innsbruck. Yes nama de pelik sekali kan? Emm apa ada kat sini haa? ada SWAROVSKI. haha perlukah huruf besar di situ, yes, perlu perlu. hahaha. Oleh kerana we're on a budget trip, kenalah sentiasa berjimat cermat dengan meminimizekan pembelian barang2 tak perlu seperti SWAROVSKI. I'll come back here bila da kaya nanti okay? haha memang da tak dtg balik lah kalau macam tu haha.

Oh Golden balcony. Mengikut sumber yg 90% saya percaya which is Shaykh Wikipedia:

Hmm agak menarik. kawin dua rupanya hahaha. Nampak tak Golden Roof yang kat bangunan depan tu ha. kecik je. Roof tu tau bukan payung tempat org lepak2 tu. Apa2pon, lawa la Insbruck ni sbb dikelilingi gunung2, pastu awan2 sume. It is just perfect! Subhanallah mmg lawa lahhh tak tipuu.

Lepas merayau2 membeli souvenir, dan sebagainya, kami pon pegilaa ke tempat yang namanya sky jump ramp. Time tu saya cam blur2 ayam apalaa abg hairul ckp ni. Len kali sila la membuat homework mengkaji tempat yang anda akan pergi ye cik. So rupa-rupanya sky jump ramp tuuu ialah ini:

So this place was build for Winter Olympics by an architect Zaha Hadid. Cool la sbb Zaha Hadid is a "she". haha. Oh oh nama hill ni bergisel. Lalu kerana curiosity yang tinggi saya pon melihat youtube bagaimana orang bermain ski jump ramp ini. Gosh sangat la menakutkan. Lihat sini. Btw, Zaha Hadid won the international competition for the ski jump in 1999. Agak cool la bnda ni sbb kat atas tu ada public space sume. Go Zaha Hadid! Haha tak pasal2. Architect memang macho. 

But anyway, walaupon saya tak paham apa yang sy tgk time tu, I had an awesome time melihat scenery yg mmg takley blah cantik. Subhanallah!

Taqwa - doing what Allah wants, avoid what Allah prohibited
Taubah - we should all make taubah. This is the foundation and better than all of what muslims fighting over right now.
Learn - study your religion. rules regarding fiqh, etc
Spend - spend your wealth that Allah has given. Do good with the wealth.

It is just a short period of time that you have in this world. Spend it well.

2010 ahead.

Maka membukalah Naziha lembaran baru 2010 dengan gembira sekali. hehe. Toronto was such a beautiful experience despite its extreme weather. Coldness makes me tired but nevertheless subhanallah snow is just amazing. Need to trade something to get something else eh?

2010 will be obviously a huge year for me academically. May Allah make it easy. resolutions? gulp but oh well I need to find what I am actually interested in doing before commencement and ehh you'll never know what life will give you kan? Tu academically lah kan, kalau sudut2 lain semuanya under constructions hehe.
Oh btw, since I just came back from RIS, maknanya ada la buku yang TERbeli kan. Sape2 nak pinjam(Vandy ppl) just let me know, more than glad to give. A great way to spend another week of winter break =D.
